VAT & GST rates by country

Standard rates used as presets in the calculator. Rates are indicative — confirm with the official tax authority before filing.

Standard rates below are a convenience reference and change from time to time. Some countries also apply reduced, zero or exempt rates to specific categories (food, books, children's clothing, and so on).

* India applies a multi-slab GST structure (commonly 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%); 18% is shown as the common standard band.
** Canada's federal GST is 5%; provinces add their own tax (HST/PST), so the effective rate is often higher.

Reduced, zero and exempt rates

Most VAT systems are not a single flat rate. Alongside the standard rate there are usually one or more reduced rates for essentials, a zero rate for exports and certain goods, and exemptions for specific services. If you are invoicing, check which category your product falls into before choosing a rate — the preset here is only the standard rate.

Reverse charge and cross-border sales

When a business in one country sells to a business in another, the reverse-charge mechanism often applies: the seller invoices without VAT and the buyer accounts for it. Consumer cross-border sales can trigger special rules too (for example, EU OSS for distance selling). Those situations need professional advice — this calculator handles straightforward add/remove maths.
