9% GST, and the two exceptions

Singapore’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) stands at 9% — the final step of the 7% to 9% increase that was phased in over 2023 and 2024. There is a single standard rate; specific categories instead sit at 0% (zero-rated) or are exempt.

StatusTypical examples
Standard 9%Most goods and services: electronics, professional services, restaurant meals, local retail.
Zero-rated 0%Exports of goods, international services, and certain prescribed supplies.
ExemptFinancial services, the sale or lease of residential property, and digital payment tokens. No GST is charged, and related input tax generally cannot be claimed.

One practical detail visitors notice quickly: displayed prices in Singapore may include or exclude GST depending on the setting. Businesses quote “GST exclusive” amounts to one another, while consumer-facing prices are usually shown inclusive.

Adding and removing 9% GST

Add: S$1,000 net → S$1,090 (GST S$90). Remove: S$1,090 ÷ 1.09 = S$1,000 net. Two more reference pairs: S$25,000 net → S$27,250; S$5,450 gross → S$5,000 net (GST S$450).

At 9%, the GST inside a gross price is a little over 8.25% of the total — so the “subtract 9%” shortcut under-removes slightly. Divide by 1.09 instead, and the figures reconcile exactly.

Registration and filing basics

  • Registration threshold: you must register once your taxable turnover exceeds S$1 million over the past 12 months, or is expected to exceed it in the next 12 months. A retrospective basis applies to recent registrations since late 2025, and businesses should monitor turnover continuously, not just at year-end.
  • Filing: GST returns (GST F5) are usually filed quarterly through myTax Portal with IRAS; payment is typically due one month after the end of the accounting period.
  • Overseas businesses: selling digital services or low-value goods to Singapore consumers can trigger a simplified registration regime even without a local establishment. Check the IRAS pages for the current requirements before assuming you are outside scope.

Notes for Singapore trade

Two rules worth knowing as a small business: imported services may fall under a reverse-charge style rule (you account for GST on services you buy from overseas suppliers when you cannot fully recover input tax), and zero-rating for exports depends on keeping the right documentation. For anything beyond the arithmetic, the IRAS is the authority to check.

9%, a single standard rate since 1 January 2024. Specific categories are instead zero-rated or exempt.

When must a Singapore business register for GST?

When taxable turnover exceeds S$1 million over the past 12 months, or is expected to exceed it in the next 12 months.
