One rate, no reduced bands, arithmetic you can do in your head — Denmark's moms is about as simple as VAT gets.
Denmark’s single 25% moms rate
Denmark is the exception in Europe: it has one VAT rate — 25% — and no reduced rates at all. Groceries, books, transport and services all carry the same rate; the only reliefs are zero-rated supplies (exports, most newspapers, certain EU cross-border supplies) and exempt activities (financial services, healthcare, education, passenger transport).
That makes Danish calculations refreshingly predictable — every moms figure is 25% of the net, or 20% of the gross. Search for “moms” on a Danish invoice (“faktura”) and you will see the net, the moms and the total.
25% moms — and the one-fifth shortcut
- DKK 1,000 net → DKK 1,250 (moms DKK 250).
- DKK 1,250 ÷ 1.25 = DKK 1,000 net.
- DKK 8,000 net → DKK 10,000; DKK 50,000 gross → DKK 40,000 net (moms DKK 10,000).
- Handy shortcut: at 25%, the moms is exactly one-fifth of the gross — divide the total by 5 for the tax, and take four-fifths for the net.
Registration and filing basics
- Threshold: VAT registration is required once taxable turnover exceeds DKK 50,000 over a rolling 12-month period; foreign businesses selling into Denmark register regardless of size.
- Filing: moms returns are filed quarterly in most cases, monthly for larger businesses, and half-yearly for the smallest — all through TastSelv Erhverv with Skattestyrelsen.
- Business register: your CVR number identifies the business; VAT-registered companies show it alongside “moms” on invoices.
- Cross-border: intra-EU B2B services are reverse-charged; distance sales to Danish consumers run through the EU One Stop Shop.

Danish VAT questions
What is the VAT rate in Denmark?
25% — a single standard rate with no reduced rates. Only zero-rated and exempt categories exist alongside it.
How do I remove 25% moms from a price?
Divide by 1.25. DKK 1,250 including moms becomes DKK 1,000 net with DKK 250 of moms — and at this rate the tax is conveniently one-fifth of the gross.
When must a Danish business register for VAT?
When taxable turnover exceeds DKK 50,000 over 12 months. Foreign sellers register regardless of turnover.
Does Denmark reduce VAT on food or books?
No — Denmark’s distinctive feature is that essentials carry the same 25% rate as everything else, with no reduced-rate ladder.
How often are Danish VAT returns filed?
Quarterly for most businesses, monthly for larger ones and half-yearly for the smallest, via TastSelv Erhverv.
