How to use this VAT calculator

  1. Pick your country to load a typical rate, or type your own rate into the box.
  2. Enter the amount you are working with.
  3. Choose Add VAT when you have a net price and need the gross price.
  4. Choose Remove VAT when you have a gross price and need the net price and the VAT portion.
  5. Read net, VAT and gross in the results panel — the copy button gives you a one-line breakdown.

The calculator recalculates as you type, so there is nothing to submit. It works on any device and offline once loaded.

How VAT is calculated

Adding VAT (net to gross): Gross = Net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). The VAT amount is Gross − Net.

Removing VAT (gross to net): Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). The VAT amount is Gross − Net.

At 20%: a £100 net price becomes £120 gross with £20 of VAT. Working backwards, a £120 gross price becomes £100 net with £20 of VAT. The key point is that VAT is charged on the net amount, so to remove it you divide — you never simply subtract the percentage from the gross figure.

When you need to add or remove VAT

  • Quoting a business customer — you often quote a net price, then need the gross figure to show the total.
  • Setting a retail price — work backwards from a tax-inclusive price to see your net margin.
  • Bookkeeping — split gross takings into net and VAT for your return.
  • Checking an invoice — confirm the VAT a supplier charged matches the net amount.
  • Cross-border sales — check what VAT or GST applies, and where the reverse charge moves the liability to the buyer.

VAT, GST and sales tax — the difference

VAT and GST are the same idea under different names: a tax added at each stage of a supply chain and collected by businesses on behalf of the tax authority. VAT is the term used in the UK and the EU; GST is used in India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Singapore. Both are normally reclaimable by registered businesses, which is what separates them from a simple retail sales tax.

A sales tax (as used in much of the United States) is charged once, at the point of sale to the final customer, and is not reclaimable along the chain. That is why US prices are often quoted excluding tax, while VAT and GST prices usually include it.

If you sell across borders the rules get more involved: business-to-business sales between VAT-registered businesses often use the reverse charge, where the buyer accounts for the tax instead of the seller.

How to check a VAT invoice

Enter the gross total from an invoice and the rate that should apply, switch to Remove VAT, and you should get back the net figure and the VAT the invoice claims. If the numbers do not match, either the rate is wrong, the invoice mixes rates, or the VAT was worked out incorrectly. The reverse VAT calculator does this in a single step, and the examples page gives reference figures you can compare against.
