Belgian invoices label the tax as BTW in Dutch, TVA in French or MwSt in German — three names, one 21% rate. Quotes often show “excl. btw” and “incl. btw” side by side.

Euros, worked at 21%

  • €100 net → €121 (VAT €21).
  • €121 ÷ 1.21 = €100 net.
  • €1,500 net → €1,815; €6,050 gross → €5,000 net (VAT €1,050).

Small business scheme and filing

  • Small business exemption: Belgium’s “kleine onderneming” scheme exempts small businesses below the turnover limit from charging VAT — €25,000, with a reform approved in 2026 set to raise it (check the FPS Finance for the applicable date before you rely on €30,000).
  • Filing: VAT returns are filed monthly by default, or quarterly for smaller businesses; the annual client listing (“listing 725”) is a Belgian tradition worth diarising.
  • Cross-border: intra-EU B2B services are reverse-charged; distance sales to consumers run through the EU One Stop Shop. Belgian VAT numbers start with BE and are VIES-checkable.
  • Authority: the FPS Finance (Federal Public Service Finance) administers VAT.
