Greek ΦΠΑ runs at 24% — except on the islands, where the discounts change the maths. Add or remove both, in euros.
Greece’s ΦΠΑ rates
| Rate | Typical application |
|---|---|
| Standard — 24% | Most goods and services. |
| Reduced — 13% | Foodstuffs, medicines, hotel accommodation, some services. |
| Reduced — 6% | Books, newspapers, medicines covered by specific lists, cultural events. |
| Island discount | Certain Aegean islands apply rates reduced by 30% — roughly 17%, 9% and 4%. The discount was extended at the start of 2026 to the North Aegean islands, Evros (including Samothraki) and smaller Dodecanese islands under 20,000 residents. |
Greek VAT is written ΦΠΑ or transliterated as FPA; on invoices you will also see the ΑΦΜ tax number (AFM) of the parties.
Working with 24% VAT in euros
- €100 net → €124 (ΦΠΑ €24).
- €124 ÷ 1.24 = €100 net.
- €2,500 net → €3,100; €6,200 gross → €5,000 net (ΦΠΑ €1,200).
- At 13%: €100 → €113. At 6%: €100 → €106.
Registration, filing and myDATA
- Small business scheme: the smallest businesses (turnover up to €10,000) can operate under a simplified exemption regime; registration with AADE is still required to trade.
- Filing: ΦΠΑ returns are filed monthly or quarterly through AADE’s online services, with payments and filings under tight deadlines that carry interest if missed.
- myDATA: Greece’s e-books platform — businesses transmit invoices and accounting data to AADE in near real time. The systems are unusual compared with other EU countries and worth setting up properly from day one.
- Cross-border: intra-EU B2B services are reverse-charged; consumer sales go through the One Stop Shop. Greek VAT numbers start with EL and are VIES-checkable.
