Italy VAT Calculator
Last reviewed 16 October 2026
An Italian invoice quotes net (imponibile), IVA and the total — this calculator moves between all three, at 22% and the reduced rates real fatture use.
Italy’s IVA rates
| Rate | Typical application |
|---|---|
| Standard — 22% | Most goods and services. |
| Reduced — 10% | Hotel accommodation, restaurant services, some foodstuffs, certain construction works. |
| Reduced — 5% | Selected food products and social services. |
| Super-reduced — 4% | Basic necessities: bread, milk, pasta, books, newspapers. |
Italian invoices (“fatture”) show the net (“imponibile”), the VAT (“IVA”) and the total (“totale”). Many also carry the Italian VAT number (Partita IVA) and, since e-invoicing became standard, a digital transmission code — don't let the extras distract from the three numbers that matter.
What 22% does to a round number
Adding: €100 net → €122, with €22 of IVA. Removing: €244 ÷ 1.22 = €200 net, with €44 inside. For larger sums: €5,000 net → €6,100 gross; €12,200 gross → €10,000 net.
For a quick check in the other direction: at 22%, the IVA inside a gross total works out to about 18% of it — a hair under a fifth. If a supplier's figure is further off than that, get the calculator out.
Registration, filing and e-invoicing
- E-invoicing: most Italian business-to-business invoices must be issued electronically through the Sistema di Interscambio (SDI) — a distinctive feature of the Italian system worth knowing before you trade there.
- Filing: VAT settlements are typically monthly or quarterly depending on turnover, with an annual return; small taxpayers can opt for simplified regimes.
- Cross-border: intra-EU B2B supplies are reverse-charged; distance sales to consumers go through OSS. Italian VAT numbers start with IT.
